Jacquard upholstery has been esteemed since its surge in popularity in the early 19th century. Renowned for its distinctive textural surfaces and luxurious associations, jacquard is prevalent in a diverse range of interior styles, from sophisticated sofas and upholstered banquettes to elaborately patterned cushions and opulent, metallic jacquard table mats. Textile artists and internationally acclaimed fashion designers, such as Diane Von Furstenberg, often incorporate jacquard and damask prints into their creations; Marc Jacobs even offers a MasterClass on the use of jacquards in fashion design. "Jacquard weaving introduces a delightful complexity to fabrics, adding a unique depth to rooms and upholstery," explains Randy Kemper, partner and head of design at Ingrao, Inc., a New York City-based architecture and design firm. "While they have historical significance, the technique's ability to add texture to solid fabrics makes them indispensable for modern interiors."

"I frequently use jacquards for upholstery due to the luxurious intricacy of their weave, which creates a beautiful and refined appearance," says designer Jonathan Savage, head of Savage Interior Design in Nashville. "Jacquards are an excellent material for upholstering chairs and other furniture because they are very structured. They resist wrinkling and maintain a neat appearance, making them perfect for creating clean-lined interiors and more formal spaces." He has a preference for contemporary, organic jacquard patterns like Intuition by Zimmer + Rohde, a linen-cotton blend jacquard with sketch-like brush strokes arranged in a crisscross pattern. "Unique graphic patterns feel more modern to me than traditional damask jacquards," he notes, referring to double-sided jacquards woven with threads of contrasting sheen. "However, both can be effective in modern spaces when used sparingly. My advice would be to avoid overuse!"
