The original electronic Jacquard looms were introduced to the market in the 1980s, more than a century and a half after Jacquard first revolutionized the textile industry. Today, Jacquard's punch card programming has been widely replaced by modern computer programming, allowing for far more complex designs. However, the fabrics he produces still bear his name as a tribute to the amazing advances he came up with centuries ago.
Modern Jacquard fabrics can be made from a variety of fibers, from natural cotton and silk to man-made polyester and polyester-cotton blends. What they all have in common is the method of manufacture. Generally, Jacquard fabrics tend to be more complex in design and stronger and thicker than many other weaves. The defining feature of Jacquard fabrics is that the design is woven into the fabric itself, not stamped, printed, or embroidered onto the fabric. Because of this, some Jacquards are reversible, with a negative of the pattern on the reverse side.
